Abdul’s portrait pieces are plain and uncomplicated. Accurate portrayals of their subjects, they depict people’s faces in fine lines and cloudy shading.

Paste Ups – Why Making Print Media Was Pretty Hard Work Prior to the 90’s

Before print could be produced on a common computer, people had to manually make each page of our favorite publications.

The intricate process of doing so was called ‘paste up,’ and yes, glue was involved.

When a crazed, ransom-demanding kidnapper can’t demand money in person, he cuts clippings and pastes them on paper to mail to the authorities.

When a trained professional paste up artist was tasked to produce pages for tomorrow’s newspaper, they’d do… Almost the exact same thing.

“A professional known variously as a paste-up artist, layout artist, mechanical artist, production artist, or compositor would cut the type into sections and arrange it carefully across multiple columns.”

Literally gluing together the next issue of National Geographic may seem a suspiciously simple process for such a prestigious publication. And it is.

But, it’s also the process that was actually used before computers rendered it obsolete. What a feat!

Her mandala pieces are particularly pleasant, putting patterns together to form impressive assortments. Even pop culture finds its way into her art; characters like Jack Jack of the incredibles jump off the page in incredible detail.

FINALLY POSTING AGAIN?!!😱 Its been so long since I have posted a drawing on this account and I am so so so sorry for that!! This here is a drawing I did in art class and I'm pretty proud with how it turned out😊 (got a 👌 grade) but basically how I created this is that I drew one of the sides and then my art teacher made 4 photo copies of that and then I had to color them all WHICH TOOK A WHILE😂 and then I just glued them to make it look all cool and stuff! I'm gonna hopefully post more from now on, already working on a collab! Maahy’s Magnificently Meticulous Drawings are Excellent Distractions @maahyart

Maahy’s detailed and dramatic artwork deals a tribal blow to zentangle techniques. Results are as mesmerizing as they are multifaceted.

Colors swirl with lines to gorgeous grandiosity in each of Maahy’s pieces.

Patterned portrayals of animals amass heaps of detail so dense they appear to move on still paper. It’s a powerful art style, for sure.

Kasey’s art builds out its own universe of colorful characters, all with ample mischief and mirth. Cartoony, yet standout, each character and scene she depicts is fascinating enough to warrant its own show or strip.

Animals swim, jump, stand and fly about the strange environments Golden gives them. Her self-imposed drawing prompt challenges result in truly astonishing visuals.

The watercolor element to Kasey’s work softens the subjects of her illustrations and lightens the mood with subdued hues.

Isabelle Staub Brings Cartoon Characters to Life

A few favorites from classic cartoons have been given sweet makeovers in this pretty set of pics by freelance illustrator and artist Isabelle Staub.

Isabelle’s impressive art transforms already colorful characters we all know and love into full-blown, life-like masterpieces.

Fantasy and reality merge in Staub’s upgraded character paintings.

Her art style loyally portrays the likes of Velma (Scooby Doo), Nani (Lilo & Stitch), the Power Puff Girls and more with a tasteful dose of realism. Uncanny stuff, and way too cool to ignore.

Best of all is the way she subtly shifts their features in her own expressive style. Though they’re the same lovely ladies we remember, they’ve taken on a new dimension.

The LED Art of Julian Opie

When you hear the word “sculptures,” clay, marble and metals come to mind. What then, can be made of British sculptor, Julian Opie’s inspiring creations?

As a major part of the New British Sculpture movement, Opie crafts caricatures of light. With LEDs, his creations come to vivid life as electric wanderers amidst the crowds of many city streets.

These vivid works of art conjoin the monoliths of old with modernity’s flashing lights – illustrating the common persona of the city dweller.

“I’m not really sure what art is.” – Julian Opie

Opie began garnering attention as early as the 80’s with a number of painted metal sculptures. He’d go on to depict mostly walking figures in his work, as well as a very cool image of (and for) the band Blur.

A touch of minimalism makes Opie’s art memorable and vaguely familiar at once. Like simple line drawings, they’re mere approximations of life, but they take on their own as lone twinkling constellations.

In Julian Opie’s LED creations, all the hallmarks of his style interact whimsically. The result is expressionless recognition of humanity and existence.
