Yates Is Ready to Start “Living On The Moon”

Odd Nugget Social-done

Soft singing to a shimmying rhythm, Yates’s “Living On The Moon” lifts off, quick and quiet, to land in the stars.

More Music: William Fitzsimmons’s sentimental “Distant Lovers”

Far, far away… Far, far below…

You’re far, far above. A cloud, a God, A bird…

Looking for limits in the sky… You’ve heard…

The sky is as high as you try to go.

“…Telling me the world is in panic…”

An invitation to escape opens “Living On The Moon”. It’s an emergency exit… Pale tones intone with calm melancholy a rush of wanderlust.

Yates makes the most of the sound with sparse vocals, restrained and crystal in clarity. Wind over water, his voice calls as counterpoint to a chorus of chords.

Particularly pleasing is the percussion at play. The rhythm is simple, yet subtly enhanced. Shakers, snaps and tambourines tap spice over this tune as crunchy guiro strokes elongate in waves, repeating throughout the track. All the while, strumming strings reverberate as surfacing ripples, bound in sway to a rocky shore. It’s melody with mobility.

Easy listening lovers will love this. “Living On The Moon” is its own escape; a getaway you can take anytime you listen. So, listen and let go.

Kitty O’Neal Comes Around “Without a Sound”

Odd Nugget Social-done

Smooth, watery guitar and airy vocals pool in Kitty O’Neal’s “Without a Sound”.

3rd track on her lush new album “Giving in to You,” this song shows off everything O’Neal’s music makes use of. Soft strings, gentle singing and shifting dynamics…

“I can’t let it go…”

Hanging by a thread, the world spirals beneath you.

Air above seems weighted. Your breath is baited.

A snap, a rush and flush with fear… You’re falling. All this for a kiss.

“You are my outside looking in.”

Dynamic flourishes a-la Florence + the Machine meet Wolf Alice-esque soft rock in “Without a Sound”. Kitty creates an intimate, moving atmosphere in her music with a full, yet open arrangement.

There’s a lovely liquid feel to this tune, due in large part to the guitar work. Vocally, Kitty fits right in, calm and collected in poetic anguish.

A jazz vibe permeates “Without a Sound” as well. It’s all in the rhythm. Taps and rimshots snap and clang in all the right moments, then recede when less is needed. Neat.

This is a great song to kick back and appreciate, as is the full album “Giving in to You”. Give it a go and let go.

He Arrived By Helicopter’s “Cold Damn Truth” is Sonic Serenity

Odd Nugget Social-done

Misty-eyed melancholy mixed with morose melody make He Arrived By Helicopter’s “Cold Damn Truth” a soothingly mellow track to enjoy.

As the first single preceding a full album release and show at the McKittrick Hotel in NYC on September 13, “Cold Damn Truth” gives out a clear sample of his sound.

A wealth of tragic self-reflections ride on icy airwaves from driver to drum…

“Tell me straight…”

Wind wails at you, tossing cloth and hair with soft fury.

Over the ledge of the rooftop is your idea of salvation.

You’re waiting for someone to stop you. Waiting…

That someone is yourself. You’ll take the stairs.

“…Even if it kills you to.”

Soft and subtle, “Cold Damn Truth” is. A lit-lighter-waving sonic tonic for life’s assorted ailments… Lyrically, this is a sweet and sorrowful surrender.

Hints of Bowie and Boomtown Rats enliven the spectrum in “Cold Damn Truth”, particularly in the artist’s inflection. Christian Gibbs (aka. ‘He Arrived By Helicopter’) blows breathy vowels in moody mourning throughout the track. His voice sounds cold and damp as moonlit dew.

Guitars are the main course in “Cold Damn Truth”. One twangs and sways in electric overtones as another pulsates rhythmic mid-frequency friction. It’s a languid sort of liveliness.

For an especially chill listen and profoundly mellow vibes, “Cold Damn Truth” is perfection. No lie! Listen.

Sunday Visits the “Perfect Place”

Odd Nugget Social-done

Windy whistling and tribal psychedelia enter house space in Sunday’s new release “Perfect Place”.

“…Too many people…”

A parachute snags at air above you. Rushing wind slows to sweetly greet you.

Gliding in step, an eagle joins you. From all around, the view astounds you.

You never want to reach the ground.

“Give me a reason…”

“Perfect Place” sounds the way falling into a canyon would feel. It’s all air and rush and calm and quiet.

Sunday sings sunlight over cold quiet contour – blowing vocals on a chill beat. So cool, it’s frozen.

As is his style, Sunday swaddles “Perfect Place” in synthesized sounds. His special brand of harmonic haze comes tuned to duck swiftly under each kick – wrenching softly at the lungs like warping time.

Relaxing music makes for a proper Sunday, but Sunday’s music is relaxing any day of the week. The mind, it settles in a sea of sound.

“Perfect Place” puts a special spin on Sunday’s contemplative style. It’s a more involved and dynamic facet of his sound you’re likely to love. Listen.

KUOKO Fascinates “Birds on the Fire Escape”

Odd Nugget Social-done

Stream of consciousness experimentation drizzled in drops of reverb rains down in KUOKO’s gorgeous “Birds on the Fire Escape”.

“…I know even if the sun doesn’t shine, you’ll come.”

A dismal day. Gray. Big billowy blankets crowd out the sky.

Elbows moisten on the sill. Still waiting…

A ruckus of wings and wind shocks the silence. Birds brace for flight seconds after landing. For a second, a spot of sunlight sprays your face bright white.

Odd Nugget Soc-done

“…They just sing to my heart.”

“Birds on the Fire Escape” is a lovely listen on multiple counts. Kuoko sings her thoughts, her thoughts ring clear over a sparse arrangement of reversed synth notes and the notes ricochet, tethered to a snappy beat.

The whole of this track sounds like a memory in the making. There’s evident melancholy, but also flecks of nostalgia and joy floating on its surface.

Guessing at KUOKO’s influences for this song would lead you to the likes of Bjork and Massive Attack. Deliberate, careful rhythmic arrangements and tentative tonality color it experimental gold.

Especially intriguing is the KUOKO’s key. Decidedly Eastern, it’s deliciously ambiguous – dribbling nonchalance.

For relaxing thought provocation, KUOKO’s “Birds on the Fire Escape” is perfection. Pleasant pondering.
